Why You Can't See the 850nm Light on Your Red Light Therapy Device (And How to Check It's Working)

You just received your red light therapy device, switched it to 850nm mode — and nothing seems to happen. No visible glow, no obvious light. Is it broken?

Almost certainly not. Here's what's actually going on.

The 850nm Light Is Invisible by Design

Near-infrared light at 850nm sits outside the visible light spectrum. Human eyes can only detect light between approximately 380nm and 700nm — so 850nm is completely invisible to the naked eye. This is not a defect. It's physics.

The 660nm red light you can see? That's visible. The 850nm near-infrared light? It's working silently beneath the surface, penetrating deeper into tissue where it does its best work.

How to Confirm Your 850nm Light Is Working

Try these three methods:

  • Wear your protective glasses — put on the included eye protection and look at the device. The 850nm light becomes faintly visible through the lens as a soft glow
  • Use your phone camera — open your camera app, point it at the device in 850nm mode, and look at your screen. You should see a faint purple or pink glow — phone cameras pick up near-infrared light that our eyes can't
  • Darken the room — turn off all lights and block any sunlight before testing. Even with glasses or a phone camera, ambient light can make it harder to detect the faint glow

Tips for Your Session

  • Always wear your protective glasses during use
  • Use in a room with lights off and no direct sunlight for best results
  • 850nm near-infrared light penetrates up to 2-3 inches into tissue — even though you can't see it, it's reaching muscles, joints, and deeper layers of skin
