This Is What Makes NIR Different — And Why It Actually Works
Share
In Part 1 we talked about why most basic LED face masks fall short — single wavelengths, surface-only penetration, and the gap between what's marketed and what's actually delivered.
Today we're talking about what actually works. And it comes down to one thing: near-infrared light.
What is NIR?
NIR stands for Near-Infrared. It sits just beyond the visible red light spectrum at around 850nm — invisible to the naked eye, but extraordinarily powerful when it comes to skin and tissue repair.
Unlike 660nm red light which works at the skin's surface, 850nm near-infrared penetrates 3 to 5 centimetres deep into your tissue. That means it reaches:
- The dermis — where collagen and elastin are produced
- Blood vessels — improving circulation and oxygen delivery
- Muscle tissue — reducing inflammation and accelerating recovery
- The deeper cellular layers — where ATP (cellular energy) production is stimulated
When your cells produce more ATP, they repair and regenerate faster. That's the foundation of why near-infrared therapy produces results that surface-level red light simply cannot.
The power of combining 660nm + 850nm
Here's where it gets really interesting. When you combine 660nm red light with 850nm near-infrared in a single device, you're treating your skin at every depth simultaneously.
- 660nm handles the surface — tone, texture, collagen stimulation, fine lines
- 850nm handles the depth — elasticity, inflammation, circulation, cellular repair
The two wavelengths work together, not in competition. Clinical studies have shown that the combination produces significantly better outcomes than either wavelength used alone.
This is the science behind professional LED treatments at dermatology clinics and medical spas — the same treatments that cost $100 to $300 per session.
What this looks like in practice
The NIR LED Face & Neck Mask at Plumpachino combines both wavelengths in a single wireless device designed for daily home use.
Here's what sets it apart:
- ✅ 92 LED heads / 368 light beams on the face panel
- ✅ 78 LED heads / 312 light beams on the neck panel — because your neck ages just as fast as your face
- ✅ 4 light wavelengths including 660nm red and 850nm NIR
- ✅ 3 brightness levels to customise your treatment intensity
- ✅ IPX5 waterproof rating
- ✅ 10, 15, and 20 minute timer settings
- ✅ Food-grade silicone — flexible, comfortable, fits all face shapes
- ✅ Wireless and rechargeable — no cords, no clinic appointments
What to expect
Results from NIR therapy are cumulative. Most people begin noticing improvements in skin texture and tone within 4 to 6 weeks of consistent daily use. Deeper changes — firmness, pigmentation, elasticity — typically become visible between 8 and 12 weeks.
Consistency is everything. Ten to twenty minutes a day is all it takes.
The bottom line
LED therapy works. The clinical evidence is clear and has been building for over 50 years. But the device matters enormously. A single-wavelength surface mask and a dual-wavelength NIR device are not the same thing — and the results reflect that.
If you've tried LED therapy before and been disappointed, it's worth giving it a proper chance with the right tool.
Your skin operates at every layer. Your treatment should too. 🌿
