660nm vs 850nm Red Light Therapy — What’s the Difference?
Share
Introduction
If you've shopped for a red light therapy device, you've seen these numbers: 660nm and 850nm. Most quality devices include both. But what do they actually do differently — and does it matter for your goals?
Once you understand wavelengths, the next question is usually how often to use your device. See our complete red light therapy frequency guide for a full breakdown.
What Is a Wavelength?
Wavelength (measured in nanometers, nm) determines how deep light penetrates tissue. The deeper it goes, the different structures it reaches and stimulates.
660nm — Visible Red Light
- Appears as a bright red glow you can see
- Penetrates skin surface to ~1–2mm depth
- Targets: skin cells, collagen production, surface inflammation, wound healing
- Best for: anti-aging, acne, skin texture, rosacea, surface-level hair follicle stimulation
850nm — Near-Infrared (NIR) Light
- Invisible to the naked eye (your device may look dim — it's still working)
- Penetrates deeper: muscles, joints, bone tissue (~3–5mm+)
- Targets: mitochondria in deeper tissue, inflammation, nerve tissue, muscle recovery
- Best for: joint pain, muscle recovery, deeper inflammation, neuropathy, bone healing
Which One Do You Need?
| Goal | Primary Wavelength |
|---|---|
| Skin anti-aging & collagen | 660nm |
| Acne & surface inflammation | 660nm |
| Hair growth (scalp) | 660nm + 850nm |
| Muscle recovery | 850nm |
| Joint & arthritis pain | 850nm |
| Full-body wellness | Both combined |
Why Most Devices Use Both
Combining 660nm + 850nm gives you surface and deep tissue benefits simultaneously. This is why Plumpachino devices are designed with dual-wavelength output — you're not choosing one or the other, you're getting both working together.
The 808nm and 940nm You May Also See
Some advanced devices (like our 180-LED Hair Growth Cap) include 808nm or 940nm — these are deeper NIR wavelengths optimized for specific applications like scalp penetration and cellular repair at greater depth.
